Justice in and beyond integrated assessment modelling

Justice is emerging as a lens for evaluating the scenarios and pathways generated by integrated assessment models for inclusion in Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports. We aim at constructing a framework for incorporating justice into IAM tools and scenarios. Drawing upon 39 interviews with a multi-disciplinary range of experts embodying gradients of involvement with IAMs and justice-informed assessment, we map three prospective avenues – ranging from incremental to fundamental – within which IAM work might better recognize and incorporate justice dimensions. We question the degree to which justice has historically and can prospectively be accounted for in IAM tools and scenarios, and conclude with recommendations for incorporating justice that would be ‘robust’ or broadly amenable across the perspectives that our solicited experts represent.
